What is WoWProgress.com?

WoWProgress.com is the most popular unofficial PvE guild rankings site for World of Warcraft. It was launched in May 2008 and now it became a recognized PvE rating service.
We also maintain the largest guild profiles database that is updated by thousands of guild officers themselves.

How does the rating work?

WoWProgress.com pulls Character Achievement information from the Armory and transforms it into Guild Achievements with date/time attached.

Guild Achievements define guild progression. In general, the faster you progress, the higher rank you get.

Each achievement has a maximal score attached.

World first gets maximal score, next kills score determined based on interval in days (or weeks) between the kill and the world first kill plus a constant (constant = nominal score / 2). Boss kills after 180 days grant only constant amount of points.

Example1.

Kil'jaeden nominal score is 40, the effective score depends on kill day.

1. June, 16. Guild A makes world first Kil'jaeden kill. They get 40 + 40/2 = 60 points.
   
2. June, 27. Guild B kills Kil'jaeden. Their score: 40 x (180-(27-16))/180 + 40/2 = 57.56.
   
3. June, 27. Guild C kills Kil'jaeden on the same day. They also get 57.56.
   

Example2.

Tribute to Skill nominal score is 60, the effective score depends on week (lockout).

1. September, 1. Guild A takes World First Tribute to Skill. They get 60 + 60/2 = 90 points.
   
2. September, 3 (the same week). Guild B achieves Tribute to Skill. They also get 90 points.
   
3. September, 12 (the next week). Guild C achieves Tribute to Skill. Their score: 60 x (180-7)/180 + 60/2 = 87.67.
   

Guild rank may depend not only on score. Important encounters (milestones) can make guild rank higher regardless of score points.

Tier9.
Rank sorting priority:

1. Latest tribute achievement:
   • A Tribute to Dedicated Insanity (10-man only) - lockout
     
   • A Tribute to Insanity - lockout
     
   • A Tribute to Mad Skill - lockout
     
   • A Tribute to Skill - lockout
2. Tier9 score points (Anub'arak kill date)
   
3. Tier8 score points
   

That means for example, a guild that made "A Tribute to Insanity" faster (at least one week faster) will be ranked higher.
In case there are two or more guilds done the same Tribute in the same week, Tier9 score points will be used for ordering.
If Tier9 score points are the same, then Tier8 score points will be used.

Tier9 score depends on the latest (and only on the latest) hard mode boss you killed - defined by date.

There is also a normal mode rating defined by additive score which is depend on boss kill dates.
Normal mode score will disappear once guild starts doing the instance in hard mode, so the end game won't depend on normal mode progression.

Tier8.
Rank sorting priority:

1. Guilds done Alone in the Darkness pre-nerf are ranked higher
   
2. Once Alone in the Darkness done, guilds are sorted by score points
   
3. Algalon kill - date
   
4. Algalon room unlocked - date
   
5. Hard mode progression - score points
   
6. Yogg-Saron normal mode kill - date
   
7. Normal mode progression - score points
   

Encounters such as Freya +1,2,3 or Yogg-Saron without keepers grant score only once. So if you did Freya+3 you will get score only for Freya+3 (and not +1,2).

But why it's so complex?

The reason is PvE originally wasn't designed to be a competitive game (though there are steps Blizzard doing towards PvE competition design).
We like simplicity and we like when simple things done simply, but we aren't going to make a naive poor service.
Currently, ranking for a big non-linear dungeon cannot be simple.

I can't find my guild.

Please follow Add guild page and submit the form there. If you have any tier8/9 progress, your guild will appear in the list in a few hours or even in a few minutes.

My realm is missing.

Please send us an email with info about your realm (name, language and realm type pvp/pve).

We killed the next boss, how to report?

Normally the crawler itself will update your guild in several days.
There is the "update progress" button on your guild page you can use if you want faster update - usually it takes a few minutes.

It isn't updating our progress for long time.

There could be Armory maintenance or there could be our crawler maintenance that may create a bottleneck (as there many guilds might added to the queue in just a few hours). Please wait a little more and if there is no update in 2 days, please contact us.

Also note that your guild should have at least 10 high level characters, otherwise our crawler won't scan it.

Our guild has been updated but there is no new achievements.

Make sure that Armory info was updated for most of the characters. The Armory doesn't update while character is online.

What if guild has been renamed?

Renamed guild should be added as a new guild, your progress will be transfered if you have enough members that did the achievements. The old guild will disappear once there will be less than 10 high level members.

There is an inactive guild in the listing.

If the guild is really inactive please report it by email describing why they should be removed.

What's the difference between Encounter and Achievement rating?

Encounter rating based on encounters: boss kills, hard mode kills, skill based achievements that limit number of trials.
Achievement rating based on all PvE raiding achievements.

The kill date is wrong

The Armory uses dates based on GMT time that may not match your timezone. Currently we use the Armory dates though we may switch to server (realm) timezones in future.

Part of our members left for a new guild. And now the new guild have the same achievements?

Guild rotation currently is a part of the game (there are actually many guilds reforming). At the moment WoWProgress.com doesn't penalize for reforming in case significant part of the new guild have achievements.

How to update guild recruitment info?

If there is already a person who updates your guild profile, then you should contact the person first (ask your guild mates). If you want to be added as a guild profile admin, then existing profile admins have permission to add you (as registered site user).

If there is no profile admins yet or the person is unknown, you can submit your info - just register on the site and follow the [update] link.
Your first submission will be pre-moderated manually.
Please make sure you defined your characters in your user profile so we know who you are in game. Also, try to provide a nice profile so we see that you are the person who will update it regularly.

We killed boss faster than another guild did it, why the other guild ranked higher?

You killed the boss in the same day (or week for the tribute achievements) which means you got the same amount of points.
Ranking by points means your position depends on your points, not kill time. Previous tier points will be used for sorting in this case.
