The story so far ...
Rain poured down in Duskwood. The air felt thick and moist as the plant life soaked in the much needed nourishment. The darkness that had lain over the forest for many years had lessened as of late. Amidst the sound of the rain, a lone rider made his way towards Darkshire. A dark cloak shielding him from the elements. Underneath it shone the silver armour of a crusader.

The crusader arrived at the town and nodded to the guards in passing. After sheltering his mount at the local inn, he headed up the hill to a solidary chapel and came to a stop in front of the door. He lowered his hood slowly and took a deep breath.

“The bells of war toll once more!” He exclaimed. “Duty calls upon you! Will you answer?!”

Nothing but the sound of rain filled the air for the next few moments. But then the door swung open and revealed a paladin clad in metal armour decorated with gold.

“The Light always answered those who call upon it.” The paladin said and then smiled brightly. “Good to see you again, my old friend. Come in.” The paladin looked at the crusader as he stepped inside. His beard had greyed quite a bit, yet the eyes of his old friend still shone with the same vigour as all those years ago.

“Tell me, what is this talk of war?” The paladin asked

“The demons have come at last.” The crusader answered – he looked troubled and explained the ongoing invasion.

“We’ll need more than just us to stem the tide. Where can we find our allies?”

The crusader smiled as he took a map out of his bag and opened it onto the table. It was a masterfully hand-drawn map with a surprising amount of details. The map displayed moving dots with names above them. They both looked at it for a moment in silence. Then the crusader pointed at Kalimdor.

“It looks like the druids and hunters are driving back the corruption here.”

The paladin tapped on Dalaran. “The mages and warlocks have gathered here. Although the Blackest Dread is still missing. Last I heard he was dragged into one of his own summoning portals and hasn’t been heard of since…”

“We’ll send word to everyone to meet on the Broken Shore. I’ll head to Stormwind – we need fresh troops if we are to succeed in the coming struggle.” The crusader rolled up the map and they both headed towards the door. “This is only the beginning.”

Chapter 2: the battle for Azeroth begins
Epilog 1: Burning Retribution

"Swiftly!" the crusader boomed. "Get the citizens through the portal before the building comes down on us!" -

The entirity of Novus Ordo Seclorum had answered the call to battle the moment that the horde's savage warmongering had come to light. Word had come about a giant orc army that marched through Ashenvale to Darnassus and the Alliance was slow to respond, so the individual guilds tried to intervene where possible.

The Novus Ordo Seclorum mages, Windrace, Dharoks and Mertes had opened portals to the ancient martial training fields of Darnassus to assist with the evacuation efforts. The training fields were, apart from the temple of Elune and the Druid's Grove, the largest open space in the city. So naturally many citizens were coalescing there with the hope of evacuation. Once the portals had opened and Novus Ordo Seclorum had come through, there'd been a stampede towards the potential escape path.

"Halt!" had the foremost Crusader, Dannato, ordered. "Form up, make lines! Women and children to the forefront!" he'd commanded. Dannato had been the central pillar in the foundation of the guild and his words carried a stern authority, power and calm over the gathered crowds. And the one's in earshot quickly fell in line.

The guild's Night Elves, like Ilaesti, and Mestalan were quick to take a decisive role and started repeating orders in Elfish for those who'd left their course in "Common phrases in the Common language" at home. Soon enough the first evacuees started making their way through the portal, when Ninjitsa appeared next to the old cursader Paladin, that was overseeing the treatment of injuries inflicted by the stampede earlier.

"My lord - I have reconned the city. Most refugees are headed towards the temple where Greymane and the Priestesses of Elune have set up more portals."

"Good, we cannot expect them to stem the tides of war all by themselves." The Paladin answered. "Any news from the front?"

The rogue hadn't yet had the time to answer when a giant bird swooped down from the sky and landed in the middle of the gathered N.O.S. officers. The bird shifted back to its usual Elf form and panted loudly. "Fingorlaffin! What news do you bring?" exclaimed Dannato who'd seen the druid coming down.

For a moment, Fingorlaffin closed his eyes and seemed to age a millenia in just a few moments, before he opened them again and looked straight at Dannato. "They've broken through Malfurion's siege. The fleet is broken. They bring spellfire."

For a moment, the only sounds were those of enormous treetrunks gently swaying in the now increasing winds. - Then all prior efforts were doubled and redoubled as the guild started channeling as many evacuees through the portals as they could before the inevitable happened.

The sense of time distorted from that point on. Some could swear they'd been there for hours or even days. Others said the fire came mere minutes after word had reached us. Clouds gathered above their heads and even through the giant canopy, everyone felt the change in the air. But when the rain came, it was spellfire.

"Incoming! Take cover!" shouted Major one of the N.O.S., priests and extended their holy shields to as many people in the crowd as possible. But it was hardly enough. Fire rained down and struck everywhere. Some hit far away branches and others nearby buildings. Yet others struck the crowd and the world descended into pure chaos and despair. The nearby citizens made a frenzied, desperate dash towards the portals and knocked over some of the priests, causing another fireball to strike a group of city guards that had assisted in the evacuation.

Yet, before they could reach the portal, a group of heavily armored troops blocked their path and pushed them back. The portals all fell away as the mages began channeling other magic to control the nearby flames.

"Controll the crowds! Get the citizens into the nearby training halls! Get those fires under controll!" called Dannato out and led the way, guiding the mages and priests.

The entirity of N.O.S. summoned their strengths and managed to extinguish the nearby fires and herded the remaining inhabitants of the city to the nearby training hall. Luckily, that building had been spared from the fire so far. And under the guidance of the officers, they managed to once again set up their portals. A steady, but diminished flow of refugees poured through them towards Stormwind and Ironforge, where help and shelter awaited them.

Meanwhile outside, more fire continued to rain down on the ancient tree. The scent of smoke and flame started filling the air rapidly.

"The evacuation is proceeding steadily and we'll manage to get all of them through at this rate." sounded a confident hunter, Elina, while bandaging a young boy who'd been injured by a piece of debree.

And that's the moment that the training hall was hit by the first fireball. The roof groaned and the building shook - Cracks appeared along the ceiling and small pieces came down into the crowd.

Dannato didn't hesitate for a moment. "Everyone through the portals! Now!" And he jumped down from a small platform he'd used to oversee the evacuation and started throwing guildmembers and townsfolk through the portal. Soon only a handfull remained and looked around one last time towards the devastation and fires that were consuming everything in sight now.

"The horde will feel our wrath. Justice demands retribution." they quoted the legendary Paladin, Uther. And oddly without another word or complain of aggony, the last guildmember Minako marched through the portal. Only bringing the memories of fire and carrying him a burning retribution in his hearts. The horde would pay dearly.
